Zusammenfassung

Albeit accurate identification of students’ motivation is a critical component in professional teaching, teachers struggle in judging motivation. To understand the underlying mechanisms, we examined information students and teachers use to judge students’ motivation. 298 students (Mage=14.8) and their 12 teachers (Mage=35) both judged students’ motivation on 1-item scales. Goal orientations, gender, immigration background, school grades, and characteristics of classes served as sources of information. Lens model analyses revealed an alignment of r=.28 (p =-.17). Teachers primarily used work avoidance (β=-.27) instead of learning goals. Teachers further fell for gender (β=-.14), immigration background (β=-.23), contributions on online learning platforms (β=.45) and grades (-.3
