Abstract

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are among the most common infections and affect a large proportion of the population. In addition to antibiotic and/or phytotherapeutic treatment, D-mannose is also frequently used, this also with regard to possible recurrence prophylaxis. D-mannose interacts with a mannose-binding protein (FimH) of the fimbriae of uropathogenic E. coli and thus blocks the interaction and adhesion of the bacterium with the human host cell. Currently, there are no drug approvals for D-mannose. Preparations available on the market are assigned to the two product segments of food supplements or medical devices. Since in the course of various analytical tests food supplements can have relevant quality deficiencies, a representative cross-section investigation of D-mannose preparations available on the German market was investigated in the present study. The D-mannose content was analysed using a specific chromatographic method (HPLC-IEC-PAD). Fortunately, all test samples proved to be in compliance with the specifications.
