Abstract

In this presentation, we explore the role of language education in the context of educating for cosmopolitan citizenship and human rights. We discuss the implications education for cosmopolitan citizenship may yield for the (English as a foreign) language classroom and the conceptual cornerstones of human rights-informed language education. Based on our latest publication dedicated to these questions, we discuss the unique and important role of language education in this context by means of two spotlights: (1) on the development of discourse literacies as the superordinate goal of the language classroom, which comprises a strong value-oriented component as well as functional-communicative and critical dimensions; (2) on critical and transformative peace education as an inherent part of cultural learning in language classrooms. We also point to ways in which the cosmopolitan and human rights-informed language classroom might progress from here.
