Abstract

Several studies find that environmental performance has a positive link with profitability (Guenster et al. (2011), Hart and Ahuja (1996), Russo and Fouts(1997), King and Lenox (2002), Jo et al. (2013))But there are also exceptions to that (Kim and Statman(2012))Why should environmental performance be positively related to profitability?-Environmental leadership can increase sales among environmentally sensitive customers (Russo and Fouts(1997))-Pollution as an inefficiency in the manufacturing process: less wastebetter utilization of resources (Hart and Ahuja (1996))-Reduce compliance and liability cost (Hart and Ahuja (1997))-Environmentally proactive firms can attract higher-quality employees (Russo and Fouts(1997))
