Description

Distributed cooperation in computer-supported work groups can impede motivation management due to a reduction of direct contacts between team members. In this research project, determinants of work motivation in computer-supported work groups were examined, focusing on factors that trigger motivation gains in groups, i.e., increase motivation during distributed group work compared to individual work. After examining the process variables preceding motivation gains during team work (valence, Instrumentality, self-efficacy, and team trust), this model was extended with respect to central moderators, including individualistic/ collectivistic value orientation as antecedents of motivation gains in computer-supported groups. Moreover, the effects of responsibility for a group and specific communication content (explicit commitment) were identified as new triggers of motivation gains in groups and tested in both laboratory and field studies. This project aims to contribute to diagnosis and intervention in distributed group work.
