KompAdRe was initiated to develop a modeling approach that can be used to lower the effort for creating and adapting conceptual models. To fulfill this objective, a variety of approaches for an automatic or semi-automatic adaptation on conceptual models with respect to the specific needs of various stakeholders were developed. The key idea was to consolidate different approaches for the configuration of conceptual models into one coherent modeling approach. This approach was called adaptive reference modeling. The result was a conceptual framework that summarizes and combines all of the original approaches. Especially the combination of a coarse configuration - that can be performed automatically by a computer - as opposed to rather detailed configuration approaches - that have to be conducted by the modeler herself - is part of the developed framework. Furthermore, consistency checks were made part of the framework to avoid modeling conflicts that often occur in distributed modeling projects. With adaptive reference modeling it was possible to provide an integrated building set for reference model developers and users. The value of this concept was demonstrated by means of several software implementations. The project was conducted as part of the research cohort BRID2, in cooperation with the Institute for Information Systems at the University of Saarbrücken.
