Manual methods for the analysis and interpretation of cellular and subcellular dynamics are often not feasible due to the large amount of data generated, visual limitations in 3D and the complexity of the processes analysed. Automated image analysis and mathematical modelling are required and will be covered in this project, which can be understood as a quantitative/mathematical implementation of the CiM concept. The central goal is to establish novel ways to connect imaging data with advanced mathematical modelling approaches, which will also be used to gain insight in cases where direct experimental investigations are not feasible. The focus will be on the development of advanced techniques for tracking moving immune and germ cells, their dynamic shape changes and intracellular processes based on the various imaging data acquired. The methodological advancements (mathematical and computational) will be driven by close interdisciplinary collaborations within CiM. Important aims are the establishment of paradigms for the simultaneous analysis of cell migration and phenotypic changes, improved automated image analysis and the implementation of mathematical modelling as a fundamental tool to qualitatively and quantitatively describe imaging data.
