Practices of support and selection are gaining increasing relevance in the framework of new educational governance. In order to attract customers, schools provide either special possibilities of support for childrenor exclusive profiles which give them a beneficial position in the so-called quasi-market. At the same time, schools select their customers either by performance or social fit. Surprisingly, the mutual interdependenceof practices of support and selection often remains uninvestigated. However, support and selection can be regarded as two main strategies in terms of a school's performance in student assessments and external evaluations as well as for the schools' positioning in a competitive environment. To date, however, it remains unclear how support and selection are shaped in the everyday practice and how they are framed and changed by new educational governance.
