The formation and assembly of lipid domains in biological membranes is of fundamental importance for a variety of cellular processes. But so far the basics of the assembly of lipid molecules into larger domains of several hundred nanometers have been shown only by using marker dyes. In order to avoid that the primary lipid properties are altered by fluorescence markers, we want to investigate for the first time with coherent Raman microscopy the assembly behavior of lipids in artificial and cellular membranes.
