Tetraspanin-enriched microdomains (TEM) act as platforms in the plasma membrane regulating various biological processes. Depending on the composition of TEM, tetraspanins modulate, stabilize, or prevent the activities of associated molecules. In this project, we will analyze the role of the dynamic composition of TEM for induction and execution of a novel endocytic mechanism used by human papillomaviruses (HPV) for infection. In particular, we are interested in the recruitment of cellular factors regulating membrane bending and scission. Likewise, we aim to address the impact of endocytosis on the virus-induced, TEM-mediated signaling outcome.
