We will develop new coordination chemical concepts towards chromophores able to irreversibly chelate diverse cations. Thus, no modification of the biodistribution is expected upon exchange of the coordinated atom for different imaging modes. Variation of the cationic centre will lead to complementary information on identical targets using different modalities. Together with the new targeting units and bioorthogonal labelling technologies proposed in this CRC, a universal toolbox is envisaged to bridge the gap between different imaging modalities. In the long term, this will be used to interrogate living systems, tracking changes and responses at complementary spatio-temporal scales.
