This project explores legal and rhetorical or literary texts in the Islam of the so-called post-classic period (roughly after the 14th century, here with a focus on the 18th/19th centuries). There is a long scholarly tradition of interpreting these texts as an expression of intellectual and spiritual stagnation, which is why they have received little attention. This project, however, claims that precisely this period shows a remarkable diversification of legal and rhetorical discourses towards a variety of genres. Furthermore, the project relies on the premise that this also implied thematic diversification. The project aims at establishing a genre-sensitive and multiperspectival perspective on law and rhetoric in these Texts.
