Description

There is no dispute over the empirical finding that church religiosity and practice have been in steady decline since the 1960s. The religious upbringing of children and authoritarian relationships between parents and children have also declined during the same period in most Western countries, while the emphasis in families on nurturing has become stronger. Moreover, the focus of upbringing is no longer on transmitting dogmatic beliefs. While there is a certain level of agreement among scholars that a generational effect is emerging when it comes to the decline of church-based religious practice and belief across age cohorts there are very few accounts that explain these developments and changes. The research project will address this gap, and focus on the following questions: How does the transmission or non-transmission of faith take place? How do families pass on values and norms from one generation to another? How does religiosity change in the process of transmission?
