Project A10 is concerned with the development of new modes of cooperative substrate activation using bifunctional and bimetallic catalysts that comprise imidazolin-2-ylidenaminophosphines (IAPs) as cooperative ligands. IAPs are remarkably strong donor ligands and their electron-releasing character exceeds that of alkylphosphines or N-heterocyclic carbenes. A further characteristic feature is the presence of basic imino-nitrogen atoms attached to the phosphorus atom. Therefore, metal complexes with IAP ligands provide a unique platform for the bifunctional or bimetallic activation of enthalpically strong σ bonds. The potential of IAPs as cooperative ligands in Cu-catalyzed (de)hydrogenation reactions and Ni/Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions will be explored.
