About the distinction
Die Gesellschaft für Virologie (GfV) würdigte seine international viel beachteten Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Tumorviren-Forschung, die auch für eine mögliche therapeutische Anwendung von Bedeutung sind. Mario Schelhaas leitet am ZMBE eine Nachwuchsgruppe im prestigeträchtigen Emmy-Noether-Programm der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Ein Forschungsschwerpunkt in der Arbeitsgruppe von Mario Schelhaas sind Viren, die für die Entstehung von Krebserkrankungen, beispielsweise Gebärmutterhalskrebs, verantwortlich sind. Speziell interessieren sich die Wissenschaftler für den Prozess der Infektion, also dafür, wie die Tumorviren es schaffen, in die Körperzellen einzudringen.

About the award
The Society of Virology awards the Frosch Prize for outstanding scientific achievements by young virologists at its annual meeting. The Frosch Prize, endowed with €5,000, is aimed at members of the Society of Virology who have not yet reached the age of 40 (childcare periods are taken into account in accordance with DFG regulations) and do not hold a lifetime professorship. One or more outstanding publications from the last few years (ideally as first or last author or corresponding author) are the basis for evaluation. University lecturers and department heads who are members of the Society of Virology are eligible to nominate candidates.
