About the distinction
Birgit Westernströer hat sich am Centrum für Reproduktionsmedizin und Andrologie der Universitätsmedizin Münster mit Stammzellen in den Hoden von Mäusen, Weißbüschelaffen und Menschen beschäftigt. Testikuläre Stammzellen sind der Grund, warum Männer lebenslang fruchtbar sind. Die Untersuchungen von Frau Westernströer zur Entwicklung und Regulation der Stammzellen im Hoden sind daher ein wichtiger Beitrag zum Verständnis männlicher Unfruchtbarkeit sowie zur Entwicklung von Therapien auf zellulärer Ebene.

About the award
The DPZ Sponsorship Award is given annually to young scientists who conduct research with or on non-human primates. A prerequisite for the nomination is an outstanding doctoral thesis completed within the last 12 months in Germany. Applications are open to young scientists of various biological and biomedical disciplines, if primates are an indispensable part of their work. This can for example be a behavioral study in the field, a research project to understand the basic functions of the brain, or even an infection biological study for vaccine development.
