Sebastian Herwig leitet seit 2011 innerhalb der Universitätsverwaltung der Universität Münster die Abteilung für Forschungsinformationen und Forschungsberichterstattung. Parallel zu seiner Promotion in Wirtschaftsinformatik hat er von 2008-2010 an der Einführung des hochschulweiten Forschungsinformationssystems der Universität Münster mitgearbeitet. Seit 2022 ist er Mitglied der Arbeitsgruppe Datenabfragen im KDSF-Format der Kommission für Forschungsinformationen in Deutschland (KFiD) und war im Zeitraum von 2013-2021 sowohl Mitglied der Projektgruppe "Definition und Datenformate" zur Spezifikation des Kerndatensatz Forschung (KDSF), Mitglied des Expertenbeirat des Helpdesks zur Einführung des KDSF als auch Mitglied der Arbeitsgruppe zur Evaluation des KDSF durch den Wissenschaftsrat. Von 2016-2019 hat er die Landesinitiative CRIS.NRW zur Umsetzung des KDSF an den Hochschulen in NRW aufgebaut und geleitet. Er ist aktives Mitglied der DINI AG Forschungsinformationen & Systeme und war von 2015-2024 deren Sprecher.
