Description

This Dissertation explores how planning processes are shaped, reshaped, confirmed, or negotiated in everyday sociomaterial practices. It analyses the impact of everyday workplace interactions on the built environment and their implications on the social fabric of society. Through an ethnographic investigation, it illuminates the intricate connections between embodied practices, digital technology, and material artefacts. Theoretical concepts from science and technology studies, practice theories, and new materialism reveal dichotomies between body/technology and knowledge/technology. To this end, studies were conducted between 2019 and 2023 on a video internet platform, in a private planning office and in public planning departments in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The analysis was conducted and discussed in four scientific articles, in part with the assistance of a colleague, and presented to an international audience. This dissertation illustrates that digital technologies do not dictate everyday practices in planning nor lead to objective planning solutions. The main finding shows planning practice and its techniques are mutually dependent. This provides new insights actively to navigate the integration of digital technology into planning and architectural design.
