Forschungsartikel (Buchbeitrag) | Peer reviewedThe paper aims to set the reception of the Encyclical Mit brennender Sorge in the larger context of the declarations and the activities of the catholic Church towards Spain during the Civil War (1936-1939). This official doctrinal document and its reception in Spain can help to show – and assess – the attitude not only of the Vatican, but also of the Spanish Church in some of her main authorities, towards Germany, Nazism, Francisco Franco and the Falange Española in the first months of war (before the bombing of Gernika in April 1937).
