Abstract
Over the decades, psychological value research and motivational research have developed largely independentlyof each other. This is one of the reasons why until today there is little clarity about similarities and differences between the respective constructs. Another reason are different research traditions. Motivational psychology has concentrated primarily on single or few motives, while taxonomic approaches have only recently been discussed to a greater extent. In value research, in contrast, the investigation of complex value structures has played a central role for quite some decades. The present talk deals with the question of whether and to what extent insights into the structure of values can be transferred to motives. Supposing common features of both types of constructs, an attempt is made to outline a general and parsimonious taxonomy for classifying motives by borrowing from Schwartz’s (1992) value theory.
