Abstract

This paper reports on examples of research processes and methods that enable an emancipated co-production of knowledge between academic and non-academic actors. The arguments are based on the decolonial concept of coloniality of knowledge. More specifically, these theoretical concepts offer strategies showing how power relations can be considered in research processes. Building up on these suggestions, the article shows examples of research processes and methodologies which apply to the decolonial strategies by introducing the research center for the promotion and social innovation of the development of coffee culture in the Colombian state of Cauca (Cicaficultura). The guiding principle in their research is sharing the sovereignty over the definition of the problem between academic and non-academic actors. This power-sensitive access achieves research results that are relevant for both groups of actors. In a nutshell, this article shows examples of how methods of critical and applied research can be brought together.
