Abstract

AREA-MAC protocol has been developed to efficiently deal with, among others, the energy and time delay issues ofWireless Sensor Networks. This MAC protocol uses the channel polling scheme to access the channel. However, it improves the default channel polling scheme by replacing the long preamble with the short preambles accompanied with several other novel schemes. Each short preamble contains some additional information that helps sensor nodes to significantly minimize their energy consumption, packet delay and packet losses without the need of any synchronization among nodes. The protocol has been implemented and evaluated both on simulation and testbed platforms. This paper presents the implementation of AREA-MAC protocol on the DES-testbed platform along with several evaluation results in terms of energy efficiency, packet delay and packet delivery ratio to depict that the design goals of the protocol have been successfully accomplished.
