Research article (journal) | Peer reviewedPolymerization of 1,4-diaminonaphthalene on various Cu substrates resulting in stereoselectively well-defined metal-organic coordination polymers is reported. By using different crystallographic planes of a Cu substrate the structure of the resulting coordination polymer was controlled. Growing polymers on a Cu (111) surface provides dominantly bisamino-Cu-complexes at the surface where the aryl groups at the amines are trans oriented with respect to each other while on Cu (100) almost exclusive formation of cis isomers leading to cyclic tetramers is observed. On the other hand, Cu (110) gives alternating trans-cis metal-organic coordination polymers. The trans to cis ratio for Cu (111) is 85:15 and 1:99 for Cu (100) while Cu (110) results in an intermediate state with a 66:34 ratio.
