Abstract

This chapter examines the communication between coaches and athletes about the menstrual cycle, particularly focusing on the factors that hinder communication. We present findings based on two surveys conducted in Germany. They reveal that open communication about the menstrual cycle is rare in the sports community. However, many female athletes express a desire for more discussions on this topic. The chapter identifies key barriers: insufficient knowledge among coaches and gender-specific communication dynamics. In particular, male coaches demonstrate lower knowledge and a more reserved attitude towards communication about the menstrual cycle. The results suggest that improving coaches' knowledge and communication skills is crucial for addressing the situation and supporting the needs of female athletes. The chapter concludes with recommendations for sports organisations on how to promote open discussions and integrate menstrual cycle considerations into training strategies.
