Nothing New Under the Sun? On Old and New in Jewish Apocalyptic Literature

Abstract

This chapter discusses novel features emerging in later Jewish apocalyptic texts while building on older concepts and traditions. In detail, the concept of the “two aeons,” the correlation of the notions of “Son of Man” and “Messiah,” and the enhanced significance of the Torah and its re-enactment or interpretation in later apocalypses is addressed. Das Kapitel befasst sich mit neuen Merkmalen, die in späteren jüdischen Apokalypsen auftauchen, wobei auf älteren Konzepten und Traditionen aufgebaut wird. Im Einzelnen werden das Konzept der „zwei Äonen“, die Verbindung zwischen den Begriffen „Menschensohn“ und „Messias“ sowie die gewachsene Bedeutung der Tora und ihrer Neuinterpretation in späteren Apokalypsen behandelt.
