Abstract

Literature and classroom teaching have a complex relationship: literature is not a subject that can be conveyed or taught in the conventional sense. It cannot be fully understood in a traditional way, and it allows for individual aesthetic approaches. Classical school-based teaching situations are often at odds with this. This volume presents perspectives on how literary-aesthetic learning can be inspired outside the classroom and how it can engage different channels than traditional instruction. The authors explore informal reading circles, book fairs, events in libraries, and collaborative projects between universities, schools, and non-school mediation institutions, as well as out-of-school experiences of aesthetic perception in urban spaces, moorlands, or parks. The contributions in this volume advocate for opening up literature education to new formats beyond the classroom.
