Hieroglyphs and Hieratic – What is the difference and does it matter?

Lieven, Alexandra von

Research article (book contribution) | Peer reviewed

Abstract

Over more than three millennia, hieroglyphs as well as hieratic were used side by side as scripts in Ancient Egypt. While every student learns the difference between them in their first lessons, the reasons for the use of one or the other script is actually not that easily ac- counted for. The paper discusses the possible reasons for choosing one or the other script in concrete usage. Among the most important factors for this decision is the potential use in monumental context (even though the actual copy is non-monumental), as well as the presence or absence of illustrations.
