Abstract

Investigating the meaning of the name of the goddess known as Mut in view of its Greek rendering as Μουθ, it is clear that the theta at the end is relevant. Therefore, it should rather be rendered as Muth in modern studies to avoid confusion with mw.t ‘mother’. The goddesses’ name turns out to be in Egyptian Mwt.t ‘The one belonging to death’. This explains not least her association with the vulture, as well as certain other beliefs and practices connected with her, which are discussed.
