Description

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by constant monocyte immigration into the arterial wall and the formation of cholesterol, fatty acid and calcium rich deposits, which occlude the vessel lumen. Using a novel and specific probe for intravital monocyte labelling, this project aims to follow monocyte trafficking in and out of the atheroma in the living animal, but also post mortem in intact prepared arteries with up to cellular resolution. By applying imaging technologies, with very different sample capacity and resolution, we aim at an in depth understanding of the fate of monocytes during atherosclerotic disease.
