Description

The goal of the study is to uncover if, and to what extent, the GDR state security service was active in West-German universities; furthermore it asks by what means was this carried out and what results did those activities lead to. The project explores four different universities: the Westfälische Wilhelms-University Münster, the University Bremen, the University Kassel, and the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel. At these specific academic locations, it will examine who was recruited as a spy or as an informant or, who and what was spied on or observed. Which line of information and which contacts did the GDR state security explore for their purposes? What information streamed into the socialist state and how was it deployed? Was there a policy of actively influencing universities in the West? Moreover, if so, was it successful?
