Description

The project studies the function which symbolic sign systems fulfilled in the stabilisation of monarchic-constitutional power in France as well as an authoritarian one by plebiscite between 1815 and 1880. The development of political culture in the age of revolutions manifested itself in a permanent contest of antagonistic models of order. Forms of symbolic representation played an important role in the process. This is meant to be checked by means of areas of practice like political feasts and manifestations, representations of those in power and funeral ceremonies.
