CRC TRR 170 - C02: Modelling giant impacts and the subsequent thermochemical evolution of liquid metal in a convecting magma ocean

Basic data for this project

Type of projectSubproject in DFG-joint project hosted at University of Münster
Duration at the University of Münster01/01/2020 - 31/12/2024 | 2nd Funding period

Description

Giant impacts on Earth heavily influenced core formation and may have contributed to late accretion of material, but many details of these processes and their influence on the geochemical signature of Earth`s mantle remain unclear. The aim of the project is to model how the material delivered by giant impacts was dispersed upon impact into particles or clumps, and how the metallic components settled in a magma ocean. The combined impact and magma ocean modelling approach including solidification processes will shed new light on how accreted material was incorporated in Earth`s mantle and core.
