With a total of more than 150 million euros, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is promoting the digital networking of the German health system as part of the funding program "Medical Informatics" (http://www.medizininformatik-initiative.de/en/start). The HiGHmed consortium (www.highmed.org) with over 20 project partners is one of the four nationwide funded medical informatics consortia. Within the framework of HiGHmed, Münster establishes a Medical Data Integration Center (MeDIC) in order to enable digital networking of research and patient care for the benefit of patients. The first field of application for this MeDIC is the Use Case "Infection Control": Here, an automated early warning and cluster analysis system is developed in close cooperation between the Institute of Medical Informatics, the Institute of Hygiene of the University of Münster and the IT Department of the University Hospital.
