Norrish-type 1 photochemistry on small molecular systems and on polymers is used for the generation of various metal nanoparticles (NP) from the corresponding metal salts. This was documented in the 2nd funding period for the preparation of Pd and AuNPs. In the 3rd period, the generality of the concept will be explored by applying the method to the preparation of Fe, Ni, Cu, Co etc. and also to alloy NP and their activity as cooperative catalysts will be studied. New photo initiators will be designed and polymers with chiral side chains synthesized and used for the preparation of NP with chiral polymer shells. For mixed metal NPs, cooperative effects exerted by the different metals will be investigated systematically. Moreover, hybrid systems consisting of chiral polymers that act as NP stabilizing ligands will be used in asymmetric NP catalysis.
