The project aims at the creation of a digital reference corpus of Middle Low German and Low Rhenish. The Middle Low German and Low Rhenish documents coming from the period between 1200 and 1650 will be made accessible to the linguistic community in digitized form. Thus, within the framework of the joint initiative named Korpus historischer Texte des Deutschen the project covers the northern part of the historical German language region in the period from the late Middle Ages to the Early Modern Age. The corpus is arranged by regional varieties and within these chronological. The selected texts come from the domains of writing (1. administration, 2. law, 3. knowledge transfer, 4. religion, 5. literature, 6. private texts, 7. inscriptions). The objective is the creation of a comprehensive database enabling future historical linguistic research that takes into account all levels of language description (esp. the creation of a Middle Low German grammar book). Likewise the corpus will function as an empirical base for text-related mediaeval studies. In the framework of the above mentioned joint initiative the project affiliates to the corpus based Projects Old German, Middle High German and Early New German and will make strong use of the tools and methods developed through them. The texts are being transcribed, lemmatized and grammatically annotated. All texts will be transformed to the PAULA (Potsdamer Austauschformat für Linguistische Annotation) data format and made available through ANNIS, an architecture to be used for the analysis of complex annotated linguistic corpora.
