Lateral segregation is a prerequisite for the regulation and function of proteins in biological membranes. Our project examines the role of cooperative protein-lipid interactions in the formation of elaborate patterns in the yeast plasma membrane (PM). We combine experimental manipulations with complex molecular simulations to study the role of trans-bilayer asymmetry, in particular of sterols, sphingolipids and phosphatidylserine, for lateral PM organization.
