About the distinction
Der Preis wird gemeinsam an Prof. Dr. Gerhard Erker und Prof. Kazuyuki Tatsumi von der Universität Nagoya in Japan verliehen. Die beiden herausragenden Chemiker werden damit als "hervorragende Mittler zwischen Japan und Deutschland und als nachhaltige Förderer der Wissenschaft" ausgezeichnet, so die DFG. Gemeinsam haben sie das erste deutsch-japanische Graduiertenkolleg "Komplexe chemische Systeme: Design, Entwicklung und Anwendungen" ins Leben gerufen, das die DFG seit 2006 zusammen mit der Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fördert. Mit Gerhard Erker und Kazuyuki Tatsumi erhalte erstmals ein Team von Forschern die mit je 10.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung, so die DFG.

About the award
The Eugen and Ilse Seibold Prize is awarded to Japanese and German scientists and academics in recognition of their exceptional contribution towards advancing understanding between the two countries. The prize is valued at €10,000 and is awarded once every two years to one German and one Japanese researcher. In exceptional cases, the award may also go to a research team. Prizes are awarded for particular achievements in all fields of research, although the award rotates regularly between the humanities and social sciences, on the one hand, and the natural sciences, including the life sciences and medicine, on the other.
