Zusammenfassung

Based on a regional approach, this article compares Six Dynasties tombs from two exemplary regions in southern China – the capital area around Jiankang (modern Nanjing) at the Yangzi lower reaches and secondary centers situated at the Yangzi middle reaches – in order to detect differences or similarities in funerary practices. An analysis of the structure of these tombs, their ornamentation, as well as the remaining burial goods reveals an astonishing range of differences in design and content. The article aims to pave the way for a deeper comprehension of the different concepts concerning death, burial, and transience. It will thereby contribute to our understanding of southern Chinese society in a period of unrest and migration.
