Functional organic molecules have received great scientific and technological interest due to their promising potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. The applications of tailored molecular systems strongly depend on the physical properties of the interface between the molecules and a metallic or semiconducting substrate as well as the intermolecular interactions within molecular monolayers and multilayer systems. To systematically investigate and optimize these systems we will focus on the following aspects: Molecular beam epitaxy of molecular systems (e.g. π-conjugated, bridged metallocenes) under UHV on metallic and thin insulating systems, including stepped surfaces. The functional properties of the investigated systems will be controlled by both the intermolecular (hydrogen bond, p-conjugation, electrostatic and dipole coupling, coordinative coupling) as well as molecule-substrate interaction; Temperature dependent Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy- and Spectroscopy Studies (LT/VT-STM/STS: Low Temperature / Variable Temperature - Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy/Spectroscopy), and 4-probe nanoprobe measurements; Experimental and theoretical studies of the electronic properties of single molecules, small molecular aggregates and extended quasi-continuous monolayers as a 2D electron system, forming the basis for the construction of functional molecular systems.
