The long history of the Amman Citadel can be traced today only in parts in the archaeological monuments. While visitors admire the Roman Temple and the Omayyad Palace, the former Kingdom of Ammon remains largely invisible. Thus, the citadel keeps an untold story as the capital Rabbat-Ammon of the Ammonite kingdom. Unlike other citadels in the region, the Amman Citadel presents an extraordinary opportunity for archaeological exploration, allowing us to recount the story of one of the oldest kingdoms in the region because it is largely unoverbuilt. Embracing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, the Amman Archaeological Project, (AmmAP) seeks to research, document, narrate, preserve, and safeguard the rich Ammonite heritage of the Jabal al Qala and its environs. In the first phase of the project, excavations and surveys will shed light on the architectural remains of the Ammonite palace, explore artifact assemblages, establish a refined chronology, and document the monumental towers (rujm) and ruins that once defined the kingdom's hinterland. In the project's second phase, the consolidation and preservation of the remains will be targeted to be able to seamlessly integrate them into the narrative of the existing archaeological park. Our endeavor also extends to promoting responsible tourism, fostering a deep appreciation for the Citadel's historical significance and archaeology's broader role among visitors and the local community. We prioritize community engagement and awareness, actively involving students and the general public in educational programs, harnessing the power of social media platforms to reach wider audiences.
