Ernst und Berta Scharrer-Preis

The Ernst-and-Berta-Scharrer-Prize is endowed by DGE to promote scientific work in the field of neuroendocrinology. In the historical terms, neuroendocrinology developed as a fringe area of endocrinology and neurology. Ernst and Berta Scharrer´s work significantly contributed to making neuroendocrinology an experimental and clinical science. The idea that neurohypophyseal hormones are formed in neurosecretory cells of hypothalamic core was introduced. The concept of the neuroendocrine axis was formulated, and this initiated the identification of neurohumoral signals. The Ernst-und Berta-Scharrer Prize is annually awarded by DGE to grant scientific and financial assistance to endocrinologists. The prize is worth € 5.000 and is awarded for outstanding original papers in the field of neuroendocrinology. The prize was awarded for the first time in 1999, and it is planned to also award it in the subsequent years. In exceptional cases, the Jury may decide to divide the award.
